Audi R8 Buyers Guide
Posted on November 21, 2021
The Audi R8 set new standards in style, performance, and reliability when it was launched in 2008. And while new models of the R8 are still enjoying extremely healthy sales, there's also a thriving used market where you can buy an amazing amount of premium car for your money. Here's what to look for when shopping for this hugely desirable luxury car.
Two Engine Formats: V8 and V10
Across the range and the years, the Audi R8 has received several different engine configurations, However, they can all be dividing into either V8 or V10 formats. Starting at the lower end with the V8 option, there's a 4.2L mill which on most models delivered between 420 and 430 horsepower depending on the exact tuning of the output.
The V10 option was introduce a little later, in the 2021 model year, with a 5.2L engine making a substantial 525 horsepower on launch, rising to an even more impressive 550 horsepower as the model years progressed and tuning was boosted.
If you're looking for a used Audi R8 in Toronto, should you opt for a V8 or V10 version? While the V10 undeniably delivers higher power, a trawl through the user review websites shows that many drivers actually prefer the V8 options thanks to its more nimble performance rather than sheer output.
Nonetheless, the only way to decide for yourself is to book a test drive - and in either case you won't be short of performance, with 0-100kmh times hovering around the 3.3-4.0 seconds mark.
Transmission History
Earlier models of the R8 were available with either a six-speed manual transmission, or an automated single-clutch manual 'R-Tronic' option complete with paddle shifters. The reaction to the second option was mixed. Most people agreed that it delivered a more jerky, rough progression through the gear ratios, and while this was to some drivers' tastes, others hated it, so try yourself before buying.
From 2014 onward, the R-Tronic option was retired and replaced with a more conventional 'S-Tronic' seven-speed automatic dual clutch transmission, which was better received all round.
Options to Look For
The Audi R8 range was focused on eye-catching looks and stunning performance, and had relatively few extra options to choose from. Nonetheless, for an even more upscale feel, look for the higher-end models with leather seating and trims, while a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system is also available for upgraded audio.
Guide Pricing and Maintenance Costs
Although later models of the R8 will still put a hefty dent in your bank account, prices for the first few model years are now falling to the $60k-80k mark, making them a relatively affordable way of owning a true exotic car. What's more, there have been no major reliability issues or product recalls, and for a supercar the R8 has a fairly straightforward and inexpensive maintenance schedule, making it even an more attractive purchase.
