Land Rover is a British automotive brand which has had a long and interesting history. The brand is world-renowned for its powerful vehicles and iconic designs. Founded in the UK in 1948, Land Rover has been making high-quality off-road vehicles ever since.
Development of Original Model (1940s)
The name Land-Rover was created in 1948 by a company called the Rover company, and the hyphen was dropped in 1978 to name it Land Rover Limited. The original Land Rover was designed in the late 1940s by Maurice Wilks. He worked on his farm with his brother Spencer who was the director of the company.Â
The design was influenced by the jeep and the first prototype was called ‘centre steer.’ Initially, Wilks only began working with the military to provide them with convoys to travel.
Evolution through the Ages (1950s and 1960s)
The Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service (RAFMRS) began using the Land-Rover in their convoy between 1950 and 1960. The vehicle designed for the RAFMRS was blue in colour with bright yellow tops. The yellow was so helicopters could spot the car from high above. The colour changed in 1981 and was replaced with green and yellow stripes. UK mountain rescue teams, along with the RAFMRS, now use white vehicles.
Which Are the Popular Land Rover Models & How Did They Evolve?
Historically, the Land Rover has the Series I, II, IIA, and III. Currently, it has Defender, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar as its top models, which sell globally.
Land Rover was in partnership with BMW to create the Range Rover with the first unibody model called the Freelander. This was launched in 1997. BMW also played a huge role in the development of the Range Rover III. This was the first monocoque structure which had independent suspension. The car was reintroduced with Ford in late 2001.
Land Rover and Ford were to design the new generation Discovery and optimize the use of the Rover V8 engine. Ford when on to purchase the brand from BMW in 2006 and introduced it into the 4x4 market under the license MG Rover. In 2007, Ford announced it would sell Land Rover and Jaguar. In 2008, this was acquired by Tata Motors.
